Mepis Review

Mepis is a nice single disk distribution of Linux. It can be run from the CDROM and then installed easily from there. I installed Mepis on two computers. Notes:

  1. Modem didn’t work with the 2.6.7 kernel but does work with the 2.4.x.
  2. Installation was very easy, however I had already made my root partition using fdisk; so I don’t know how well it goes with Qtparted.
  3. Bad bit on setting up booting-the only choices were Grub in mbr or Grub in root partition. No choice for a boot floppy or a Grub floppy. I chose no boot and edited lilo.conf while booted in Slack after moving the Mepis kernels and System.maps to Slacks /boot directory.
  4. Sound worked.
  5. KDE is the desktop. Gnome is not a choice, but can be installed via Internet using apt-get.
  6. Every partition on my hard drive has an icon on the desktop. I tried to get rid of this by editing /etc/fstab to eliminate the mounts for them. Upon reboot, /etc/fstab was rewritten with those back in place. I don’t know how to make that change.

All in all, a great distro for a newbie. You can try to run it with the off the cdrom and then as user, you can use the installation link and you are off and running. The installation is very easy to follow and I noted that the default values were to *not* do an automatic partitioning where the whole drive is used. It would not be easy to accidentally wipe out your hard drive.
