Ubuntu/Kubuntu Install Problems

I got a cd for Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Lately I’ve been using KDE; so I installed Kubuntu on my laptop. I was very pleased with the way it configured everything, but I had a couple of disappointments.

Partitioning

First was the partitioning section. I already had a partition ready. I found that the partitioning section was not easy to follow. Finding exactly where I was supposed to choose the / mountpoint was difficult for me. Maybe I’m used to RedHat and Slackware. I also installed Debian numerous times, but this was not like the Debian I remember. Chalk that up to it just being different and now that I know how it works, it shouldn’t throw me next time.

Long time testing network repository

Then it took a huge amount of time testing the network repository. I don’t know if it went out and got more uptodate software or if it was just running that little program that goes out and finds the best repository. In the past I have found that program more than useless. I forget what it is called. Maybe it was getting new software. It told me nothing except that it was configuring apt and testing the network repository. I really thought it was hung there on 50% – 50% of what, I wondered. Then it moved along to test the security repository and on we went.

Looking for software in Kynaptic/Synaptic

Then I logged in after it did all its configuring of the programs and it was a nice KDE desktop. Sound, mouse, wifi… all working. No Mozilla. I mounted another partition and got my firefox install tar.gz. Went to install it. No gtk. Discovered kynaptic and looked for gtk of any kind. Nothing there. Apparently that is only on the Gnome desktop?? Not at all suitable. Give me back my 2-3 cd set for installing please! This division of things will not work for what I do. I want bluefish–that’s gtk too, I’m sure. But I don’t want to run Gnome. Can someone tell me how I go about getting some more offerings in kynaptic? I’m guessing maybe I can add that Ubuntu cd to the listing, but surely there must be a way to add it from the network. Do they have two different repositories for Kubuntu and Ubuntu? I don’t think I’m really going to use it, but I’d like to put something up on the site about this. Hmmm. I haven’t looked for the manual yet. Maybe that will tell me.

No root!

Oh, yes, in the process of doing this firefox/gtk dance, I discovered that I had no root password. Gee, that’s right, I thought. I was never asked for that. Being pretty smart, I reboot and go into rescue mode which is nice. I run passwd for root. I don’t know what a newbie does. Did I miss where it asked me for a root password?
