Install Boot Floppy

Creating a Floppy Boot Disk for Installation when you can’t boot from CD-ROM

If your system cannot boot from the CD-ROM you will need to create a floppy boot disk. The instruction manual for your distro should have a section on how to make this disk. There are a few floppy images to choose from and the manual should give you an idea of which to use for your needs.

To create the floppy boot disk under DOS/Windows use either the DOS program, rawrite or rawwrite, the graphical front-end for rawrite. You can usually one or both of these on the install CD-ROM of Linux. Select the floppy image to be copied and select floppy drive for the target. It’s highly recommended to use new floppy disk for this process.

You will then use this floppy to boot in order to get the installation started. In some cases you will also need to make a root disk in the same way. The instruction manual will indicate if this is necessary.
