Opening web links from Kmail (and other KDE programs) in Firefox
I only really noticed this when it stopped working on my PC, for some reason it had always worked from the day I had installed Firefox. So with some pointers from Robert Morrison on where to look to correct the problem and some sutle prodding from Stefan, here how to make web links in e-mails (and other KDE programs) open in Firefox.
For the record I am running Debian Testing with a standard debian 2.6.10 Kernel, KDE 3.4.3 and Firefox 1.0.7
As a normal user, click on the KDE button on the taskbar, click on control centre (also known as kcontrol centre), click on KDE components, click on component chooser. In the right hand window select “web browser” from the list. Under the heading “Open http and https URLs ” make sure there is a dot in the radio button titled “in the following browser”. Under this there is a box where you type the browser you wish to use, but if you look at the end of this line there is a button with three dots on it. Click this button and KDE will open a window with all the installed application on the system listed. Just click on the heading “Internet”, scroll down until you see (Mozilla) Firefox listed, clcik on the Firefox, the window will close and you will now see an entry has been put in the box, in my case it was “mozilla-firefox”. Click ok at the bottom of the page and thats it.
Now all you need to do is find a URL in an e-mail and click on it, you should find now that the link opens up in Firefox. You may find that you have to shutdown KDE and restart it for the chnage to take effect.
