Split Audio Files

mp3splt-gtk can be used to split either mp3s or oggs. This is the GUI version of mp3splt which splits the large file at selected splitpoints. The splitpoints are given in time units. This can be a little difficult to use and you may find it easier to load the file into Audacity and split it, but mp3splt is a lot faster.

Open mp3split-gtk and browse to find the file to be split.

Click on Connect which will open a small audio player so that you can listen to find the splitpoints.

Play the file in the Player tab. Click Pause the player when you are ready to set a split point. Then click “Add” on the Mp3splt window. You will most likely want to slide the slider back to the very beginning for this first point.

Click on the Splitpoints tab and you will see “description here” for the filename and 0 time if you have added the first splitpoint at the beginning. Change the name to your choice for the first file. Do not add the .ogg or .mp3 extension.

Start the player again and find the place where you want the first file to end. You can first move the slider to a point approximately where you want the split and then start the player to listen. Pause the player and add another splitpoint when you have found the correct place by listening. Add other splitpoints in the same way.

Note that you will need an ending splitpoint which may be at the end of the file. You can see the total time for the file in the Player tab. In the screenshot, it is 7min 5 sec. This can be added in the Splitpoints tab by putting the time in the appropriate blocks and clicking on Add. Another way to do this is to slide the slider to the end on the Player tab and click Add. Now the last time appears at the bottom after the 3 tracks we have labeled.

Set the directory for the split files to go in under the Preferences tab. Then click on the green check mark and the file will be split with the parts saved in the chosen directory.
