Tabs in Firefox 2.0

Restoring V1.x tab handling

One of the “enhancements” in Version 2.0 of Mozilla Firefox is the close-button on each and every tab that is open. While this makes it easy to close a specific tab, it makes it very difficult and slow to close many tabs in a row.

In V1.x, the close-button used to be at the right edge of the window, and to close 5 tabs, all you had to do is aim once and click five times. Now, since the size of the tabs is changing, you need to aim five times and click five times.

Here is a way to restore the old functionality:

  1. Open Firefox, and go to the URL <a href="about:config">about:config</a>
  2. Scroll down to the entry: browser.tabs.closeButtons (or use the filter on “Buttons”)
  3. Edit the value to be “3”
  4. Enjoy!

There is detailed information about this configuration-item available at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.tabs.closeButtons

Other Tab Tips

  • Close all but one tab: This uses just three mouse clicks. Right click the tab you wish to keep open and select close other tabs. (From mailing list thread – http://mail.linuxbasics.org/pipermail/qna/2007-January/005287.html)
  • Reopen a closed tab: Closing the wrong tab happens. That's why FF2 has in the history a “recently closed tabs” option. It even will restore the Back functionality. See “History” in the menu. (From mailing list thread – http://mail.linuxbasics.org/pipermail/qna/2007-January/005283.html)
  • Open links in new tab: To open links on a page in a new tab instead of a new window, type 'about:config' in the address window. Filter on browser.link.open and change both 'open_exernal' and 'open_newwindow' to 3. Just double-click on the number to open a small edit window to enter the new number.
